Kiskinwahamâtowin Learning Lodge
“Where Knowledge is Shared, Relationships are Strengthened, and Leaders are Inspired”
Dedicated in Honour of John Vrolijk
Amiskwaciy Cultural Society 2013–2026 Leader • Mentor • Advocate • Friend
Kiskinwahamâtowin (kis-kin-wa-ha-MAA-to-win) is a Plains Cree teaching that speaks to learning, teaching, and the sharing of knowledge. It reminds us that wisdom is gained through relationships, lived experiences, and the willingness to learn from one another. It is through these shared experiences that individuals, families, and communities grow stronger together.
Located on Treaty 6 Territory, this Learning Lodge honours Indigenous ways of knowing and creates a welcoming space where educators, families, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners come together to learn, reflect, and strengthen one another in service of children and future generations.
This Learning Lodge is dedicated in honour of John Vrolijk, who faithfully served as Board Chair of the Amiskwaciy Cultural Society for twelve years.
John believed deeply in the vision of Aboriginal Head Start and in ensuring every child had the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive within a culturally safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment. Through his compassionate leadership, thoughtful guidance, and unwavering commitment to Indigenous children, families, and communities, he helped strengthen our organization and the legacy it continues to build today.
His leadership was rooted in respect, kindness, collaboration, and a genuine belief that education has the power to transform lives. He championed opportunities for children, encouraged the professional growth of staff, and walked alongside community with humility, integrity, and heart. His dedication helped create a stronger foundation upon which future generations will continue to learn and flourish.
May this Learning Lodge always be a place where learning is embraced, knowledge is shared, relationships are nurtured, and future leaders are inspired.
May all who gather here carry forward the spirit of Kiskinwahamâtowin: learning together, teaching one another, walking alongside one another, and serving children, families, and community with compassion, humility, and respect.
May the teachings shared within this Learning Lodge honour John's legacy by strengthening those who walk through its doors today and the generations yet to come.
