Our Governance

How We Serve

Amiskwaciy Cultural Society is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors committed to supporting the strength, sustainability and continued growth of Aboriginal Head Start programming in Edmonton.

The Board provides strategic leadership and governance oversight, helping ensure that the Society remains accountable to its mission, its funding responsibilities, and most importantly, the children, families, and Indigenous community we serve.

Working in partnership with the Executive Director, the Board helps guide the organization by:

  • Providing strategic direction and supporting the Society’s long-term vision and priorities;
  • Ensuring responsible stewardship of financial resources, funding and organizational assets;
  • Establishing and reviewing governance policies that support strong, transparent and accountable operations;
  • Monitoring the overall effectiveness and sustainability of the organization;
  • Supporting compliance with legal, regulatory and funding requirements;
  • Providing oversight and support to the Executive Director while respecting the distinction between governance and day-to-day operations;
  • Supporting partnerships and relationships that strengthen opportunities for children and families; and
  • Helping ensure that decisions remain grounded in the purpose, values and cultural foundation of Aboriginal Head Start.

Our Board recognizes that strong governance is about more than oversight. It is about responsibility, relationships and accountability. Board members bring their knowledge, experience and perspectives together to help ensure Amiskwaciy Cultural Society continues to provide high-quality, culturally grounded programming while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of our children, families and community.

The day-to-day operation of Aboriginal Head Start is entrusted to the Executive Director and program leadership team, while the Board maintains responsibility for the Society’s overall governance, strategic direction and organizational accountability.
